HOD's Welcome Message
The Department of Ophthalmology Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was formerly referred to as Guinness Ophthalmic unit and located at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna. Since its inception in 1962 it has been a major provider of a full range of eye care services to the entire Northern Nigeria and the country at large. It has also been training Community Health Officers, Nurses, Medical Students and Resident Doctors. Most of them are now highly specialized eye care providers in this country and beyond. In 2005 the Department relocated to the permanent site at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika-Zaria following Federal Government directive. News and Events
The Department established outreach programmes for neighbouring communities and partner with primary and secondary health facilities. This is to reduce prevalence of blindness from avoidable and preventable blinding of eye diseases like cataract, glaucoma, trachoma, refractive error and harmful traditional practices.
Resident Doctors are sponsored for West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and National Postgraduate Medical College of Surgeons (NPMCS) both part I and II. Successful candidates are automatically upgraded to the rank of Senior Registrar and Consultant.
