Welcome Message from the HOD

The Department of Ophthalmology Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was formerly referred to as Guinness Ophthalmic unit and located at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna. Since its inception in 1962 it has been a major provider of a full range of eye care services to the entire Northern Nigeria and the country at large. It has also been training Community Health Officers, Nurses, Medical Students and Resident Doctors. Most of them are now highly specialized eye care providers in this country and beyond. In 2005 the Department relocated to the permanent site at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika-Zaria following Federal Government directive. Leaving behind its entire structure which consisted of an administrative unit including lecture room and library (a storey building), the eye clinic and optical unit/optical laboratory (a storey building) the wards (including amenity wards) and a dedicated eye theatre.

To provide high quality undergraduate and post-graduate education using state of the art facilities and highly specialized faculty. To offer highly specialized ophthalmic services that will meet the health care requirements of individual. Patients in the surrounding communities are to enhance capacity building through training, retraining and international collaborations to meet the needs of our immediate and remote constituencies
